Rainbow Lake

Today was my first full day of hiking the trail after taking a zero day to recover from summiting Katadihn.

I hiked the 10 miles out of Baxter State Park. After that you go a little ways down a logging road and begin the “100 Miles of Wilderness”

There is a sign at the entrance warning hikers not to begin this without 10 days supplies, it is the longest stretch of wilderness in the Appalachian trail, and not to underestimate the seriousness of this stretch.

I headed in knowing I didn’t have 10 days supplies but closer to 6. I figured it couldn’t take much longer than that to do 100 miles.

I headed in and hiked another 7 miles.

Most hikers tend to stay at the shelters or “lean to’s” as they are frequently called. These are essentialy just 3 walled wood structure’s with a roof.

I think they are disgusting. I look at the floors and wonder how many dirty sweaty hikers have layed on them and since they provide shelter from the rain I don’t see how they ever get cleaned. They are also notorious for rodents.

Anyhow I passed the first shelter in the 100 miles and kept on going, knowing I have a hammock and can set up just about anywhere.

I had a goal to try and make it to Rainbow Lake as marked in the data book. I pushed on and made it and found a beautiful camp spot right in the edge if the lake. I am so happy to have passed in camping near the lean to and thrilled to have made 17 miles in my first full day if hiking.

Having a hammock sure has advantages as to where you can set up out here. No need to use the shelters, no need for flat ground, just 2 tree’s and they are everywhere:)

I took a dip in the lake to clean up, made dinner, treated water for tomorrow and am now headed to bed. What a amazing camp spot!!!

Summiting Mt. Katadihn was absolutely the most terrifying experience of my entire life.

Ok I am not to proud to admit I have a sometimes dibiletating fear of heights. I can say it has gotten ever so slightly better over the years, but no matter how many times I face it never completely goes away.

I am ok in situations where I feel relatively stable and balanced. I have been hiking for many years and climbed many peaks and been fine.

I awoke at 4:30 and started my morning tea, ate some power bars for breakfast, and broke camp separating things I wouldn’t need to take up so that I could store them in the rangers office while I hiked up.

I dropped my non-essentials in the rangers office and headed on to the trail exactly at 6.

As I began my hike up I noted the geographical similarities of the lower end if Mt. Katadihn to many woods I had hiked in upstate NY’s Catskills or Adirondack mountains.

Views of the surrounding mountains began appearing to my left side and they were simply spectacular!

I was really enjoying my hike and moving relatively swiftly for someone who was not in shape. It wasn’t long, maybe 1.5 hours before I started to reach the end of the tree line and the terrain turned rocky.

Now I had read that hiking Katadihn included “some bouldering” and I have in the past done “some bouldering” so I wasn’t to worried about what lie ahead and I pressed on.

At first climbing over the rocks wasn’t so bad. It was a pretty good workout and I was moving along well. I reached a point where the climbing became more and more difficult. Soon I wasn’t just climbing over large rocks but struggling to pull myself up and over using more and more of my upper body.

My anxiety level began to increase as the terrain turned steeper and steeper. I came to a point where it required pulling yourself up onto a large boulder via a metal rod in a rock. I pulled myself up onto the rock on my stomach. As I got on top of the rock I realized that the position I had pulled myself into left me pinned on my stomach under the rock above it with no way to stand up to evaluate my next move.

I began to have a panic attack. My heart raced. There seemed no way to make a move forward and I couldn’t see a way back down off the rock I had just pulled myself up on to short of sliding off and dropping 15 feet or so.

I lay on my stomach paralyzed with fear trying to calm myself. Repeating out loud over and over to myself “your going to be ok, your going to be ok”

I contemplated my options. Lay there until someone else came along, but it was still early and I knew I was first on this trail by at least an hour. Also did I really want to be found wimpering on my stomach like that?

I looked ahead and found a crevice I could slide my fingers into. I remembered climbing shows I had watched on tv and how they demonstrated using your leg strength to push yourself up. With my fingers wedged in a rock ahead I found a slight groove I could place my foot in, took a deep breath and pulled myself up with all of my trembling upper body and pushed with my legs.

I made it safely to the next rock where I was able to stand up and try to calm myself. I wanted to quit right there. My mind was racing as was my heart. I thought of telling people how I hiked the whole AT “except the little bit at the top” I didn’t really care at that point who would have thought what. I was so paralyzed with fear I didn’t care what anyone thought, I didn’t care if I scraped 2 years of plans to hike the trail and quit all together at that point. All I wanted was a way out of the extreme terror my mind was subjecting me to.

I calmed myself and thought of how everyone that does the entire AT has a damn picture of themselves at each of the 2 signs that mark the North and South ends of the trail. If I were going to do this hike I needed that damn picture.

I told myself the rest couldn’t be as bad, it was “just a tricky spot” I looked at the boulders ahead, and decided to press on despite my racing heart and trembling body. As I moved on fear was ripping me apart. My body temperature was fluctuating wildly. I was putting on and taking off shirts, sweat shirts and my wind breaker furiously trying to constantly adjust but never comfortable.

I was de-hydrated, I was drinking so much water but it never seemed enough. I pressed on moving ever so slowly. I just kept thinking of how I needed that damn picture. It was actually good motivation. The need for a good picture was what got me across the Golden Gate despite a almost paralyzing fear on that bridge.

I pressed on for almost 3 hours. Climbing 1 boulder at a time. Still panicing throughout, still trying to calm myself but ever so slowly moving forward just hoping that each boulder climb would be my last.

I finally pulled myself up over the last of the boulders. I thought perhaps I had reached the summit, however I was to find I still had about 45 minutes of walking along the ridge on a slow gradual rocky incline to the top. It wasn’t so bad after that but I thought of the decent down and the weak condition of my body. I was pretty worried about getting down safe.

The views from the top were absolutely stunning!!! There was the sign that marked the Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail. I asked a young couple that came up a different route to take a photo of me next to the sign.

I had decided not to decend alone. Troy aka “Super Guide” who I had met on the bus from Portland to Bangor showed up. I wasn’t to keen on him since I overheard him putting gays down on the bus, but I took the opportunity to have someone to climb down with.

The climb down was slow and scary but not as bad since I had company. Troy and I talked as we made our way down and he made some racist statements followed by “I am not prejudiced or anything” I really began to dislike him but it was helpful getting down.

In hindsight several factors contributed to my terror in this situation. Being alone, it was early, I did not eat enough and being very out if shape.

Looking back I try to tell myself it was not that bad. I was being overly dramatic. Lots of people do that climb. I think though I will not be doing it again. I have been warned of the Whites and Presidential Loop in New Hampshire but told its not quite as bad as Katadihn. I have also been told if I can get through that I will breeze through the rest of the trail.

I am at BSP now. I checked in at 2 ranger stations, completed some paperwork regarding both my stay at the campground as well as my intention to begin a south bound thru-hike. They keep records of hikers so the paperwork is necessary.

At the second rangers station I met with a ranger named Betsy. Betsy is an older woman probably in her 60’s. As she completed the paperwork she began to brief me on some basic “need to know” items. Stringing your food up away from your tent because of bears etc.

Jacob and Adam who I rode in with on the shuttle from Bangor joined us and Betsy began to brief us on “Summiting” or hiking to the top of Katadihn where the beginning of the North end of the Appallachian trail actually begins (the campsite is on the trail but 5 miles down from the start).

When summiting you can leave your pack at the rangers station and borrow a day pack to take up since you don’t want to carry a full pack up a 5 mile vertical rise.

She told us we should be on the trail by 6 or 7. She said she would start no later than 7. I took that to mean I should start at 6 and when she was finished I promptly headed out to set up camp.

My camp spot is amazing! I am right next to Katadihn Stream and if you have ever had the pleasure of sleeping beside a stream you know what an amazing experience it is.

I set up camp and sat beside the stream listening to the peaceful sounds for almost 2 hours just unwinding and letting go of all the stress of the city, the commute getting here, and planning this hike.

I gazed up at Mt. Katadihn in awe of her, contemplating my climb to the summit in the morning.

Knowing I had a difficult day ahead I called it an early night and crawled into my hammock around 8.

Bangor Bus Shake Down

On the bus to Bangor, ME where I’ ll catch a shuttle to Baxter State Park in Millnocket.

The bus driver makes an announcement. “Next stop Agusta. The DOT will be searching the bus with dogs, and checking I’D’s if you have anything your not supposed to have you might want to get rid of it.”

I am thinking that’s very nice of her!. We get to Agusta and a kid quickly moves to the front of the bus and they let people of to smoke. He makes a swift but quiet exit, walks to a car which leaves quickly.

Turns out he dumped a small bag of weed and rolling papers on the bus floor.

Now I am thinking there’s a bathroom on the bus. If you had anything you didn’t want the police to find, quietly flush it. The kind of thinking that comes with age and experience I guess;)

Anyhow turns out in Maine possession under an ounce is a slap on the wrist and a ticket. He could have even stayed on the bus. I dunno maybe he had something more to hide, a warrent or something.

Dogs sniffed the rest of the bus and we are on our way.

Trail Names

A lot of people who do the trail use “Trail Names” or alias. I get it now. It distinguishes the Jane that is hiking south bound and has done the whole trail 3 times from the Jane who is north bound and only doing a 3 day section hike.

I have been asked many times if I have or want a trail name. No thanks. I’ll just go by Chip. Always will.

Treking Poles

Treking poles have gained a lot of popularity recently. I have never been a fan of them. People who use them swear by them, even ex non-believers like me:)

I have read countless articles debating their pro’s vs cons. On the one hand using them is supposed to help absorb shock to your knees, help provide stability which can improve posture and reduce back injuries. They are also helpful for river crossing’s and other situations where maintaining balance can be tricky.

The argument against them is you expend more energy and burn more calories using them. Maybe not such a big deal on a 3-4 day hike but on a 6 month thru-hike your burning 3000-5000 calories a day and those calories aren’t so easy to come by. Expending extra energy is a serious consideration.

Even if you only use them for stability and impact reduction in certain situations, you have to carry them the rest of the time and then the extra weight is a concern.

Well after much debate I have caved in and bought a pair. I am much older than the average person attempting a thru-hike and my knees aren’t feeling all spring chicken either. So with much hesitation I’ll give them a shot, but they are on the top of my list to get mailed home if I deam them not worth it.

I did manage to get a pair of the Ultralight series and they weigh very little. I knew I should have picked them up in NYC though, I could have saved $25. Oh well.

Wrapping up my stay here in Portland, ME. It has been very nice! I have found some nice walking trails to get in shape on, finalized my gear, seen most of down town, ate some great food and watched some World Cup.

The weather has been grey, rainy and foggy but I am ok with that since the rest of the week looks to be pretty nice and I’ll be camping from here out.

Getting up very early tomorrow to catch a bus ride to Bangor. I have arranged a ride from Bangor to Millnocket where Baxter State Park is and Mt. Katahdin.

I am excited, but measured and focused on the task ahead. Katahdin is no joke at almost 5,300 feet (well for us east coasters anyhow;)) Hoping for a good nights rest, up early for some yoga and will get settled in at Baxter State Park tomorrow. Will hopefully climb Katahdin Wednesday.

US vs England

Anyone who has taken a bus ride that is longer than 4 hours knows its about the absolute worst way to travel. I just got off in Portland, ME after 8 hours of bus hell. My body feels like a pro wrestler tossed me around like pizza dough and I am running on about 4 hours sleep (for the week). It’s nothing a Guiness and a week of yoga won’t cure though:)

So why would I take a 8 hour bus ride at midnight no less, to Portland when I could have taken a much faster train. Well…

WORLD CUP!!! I Am a soccer fanatic. I believe there is no sporting event in the world that rivals the World Cup. I have come to terms with the fact that I will miss most of it due to the hike. There are however 2 games I am set on not missing. USA vs England and the final.

I would have been cutting it close by train. So I hoped a midnight bus out of NYC so I could be in town in time for the big game. Now to find a place to settle in and enjoy the worlds greatest sporting event!
